Hayashi Dōei 1640-1708: A Tang interpreter and calligrapher of the early to mid-Edo period. Born in Kan'ei 17 (1640). A native of Nagasaki, Hizen Province. His father was a Chinese immigrant. In Genroku 12 (1699), he was promoted to Fūsetsuyaku, a senior position for Tang interpreters. In the same year, he adopted Kanbai (官梅), his pen name, as his surname. He studied calligraphy under Sokuhin Nyoitsu and was considered on par with Fukami Gentai. I researched this on the internet as I am not familiar with the subject. The item has some insect damage. It is in a wooden box. Something that appears to be a title is written on it, but it is illegible. Please refer to the images for further details.
