This is a girl's hitotsumi (ceremonial kimono for newborns) with a juban (undershirt). It is based on red and features auspicious patterns for girls' kimonos such as pine, cherry blossoms, temari balls, and thread spools. Thread spools symbolize prosperity and longevity, while the ox-drawn carriage represents wealth and splendor. Hitotsumi refers to a kimono for infants aged 0-2 years old. It is easy to understand if you imagine the celebratory kimono that is generally worn by babies during their Hatsumiyamairi (Shinto shrine visit for newborns). A characteristic of hitotsumi is the way it is cut, using standard-width fabric and sewing without a back seam. When dressing a baby, there is no shoulder tucking or hip tucking, and a detachable collar is used instead of an obi (sash).
