This is a handmade fishing rig for live bait, also known as "nomase" fishing, and elevator rigs. The main feature is that the overall length of the rig is set to be slightly longer, prioritizing the fish's appetite and making it less likely for the baitfish to weaken. This is why I recommend trying it not only when the fish are highly active, but also when they are not biting well. The parent hook is tied using the ear-attached outside knot, which provides good strength and causes the hook to face slightly inward, making it easier for the fish to suck in. Also, the distance between the parent hook and the child hook is approximately 15 cm, but please note that there may be some variation due to the handmade nature of the rig. Commercial rigs are often too narrow, so I've made it wider to allow for baiting larger fish. If the distance is too narrow, the child hook can pierce a vital part of the fish, weakening it, and if it's too short, the child hook becomes ineffective. The parent and child hooks are fixed, not movable, so they won't shift during the hookset, reducing the chance of the fish getting away. The photos show the rig being used for flatfish (bottom fishing) and bluefish (float fishing). I use a Yo-Zuri snap swivel (breaking strength: 12kg) and the Palomar knot for tying the line. The parent hook is a Kingfisher Chinu size 6 hook, with a soft glow bead attached to prevent the baitfish from escaping and to attract fish. The child hook is a treble hook (#6), and the leader is approximately 1.1m of pink fluorocarbon line (flexible fluorocarbon), which is said to be invisible to fish. When baiting with horse mackerel, mackerel, Japanese sardines, or gizzard shad, the parent hook is nose-hooked, mouth-hooked, or back-hooked, and the child hook is tail-hooked or back-hooked. For small fish like anchovies and small horse mackerel, the child hook is used freely depending on the size. This rig is also designed to bait larger horse mackerel, mackerel, and Japanese sardines.
