Katani Yamada (1805-1877), known as a late Edo period (Bakumatsu) Yomei scholar, feudal domain reformer, and educator. As the financial officer of the Bitchu-Matsuyama domain, he worked on reforms to save the domain from its predicament. Katani accomplished the great feat of establishing industries not reliant on rice production, repaying debts, and accumulating wealth. His pursuit of knowledge and originality played a role as the person in charge of the domain's survival, and he is known as a successful restorer of the domain's finances.
