This is a paulownia wood box for the sho, a type of Japanese wind instrument used in gagaku (Japanese imperial court music). It came with the sho I acquired. The top panel features a carved wisteria flower design, and various patterned fabrics are applied. I'm not sure what the technique is called, but it's a truly magnificent piece. Paulownia boxes are ideal for storing the sho at home, but they can be cumbersome to carry around. However, this one is a masterpiece that makes you want to carry it and show it off.
