Purchased from a unique hotel in Nagano Prefecture, this is a stylish, reversible, double-faced, and adorable free mat made by a handmade artist using vintage materials. It can be used as a trivet, cafe mat, or a small placemat, and its thickness suggests it could even be used as a pot holder. The fabric features a feed sack-style floral design. The base is a cool, pale lavender color. Scattered throughout are marguerite-like and pink-like white flowers and small purple flowers with a central vermilion-red hue, giving it a natural and lovely appearance. In the center, sewn with a sewing machine, is a striking indigo-colored Japanese sarasa or antique calico, resembling a cafe bowl or a matcha tea bowl, or perhaps a chick. It appears to be hand-painted, stamped, or batik-style wax-resist dyeing. The black outlines and light gray leaves of the veins are arranged, and red hand stitches can also be seen in the center. The unevenly faded indigo color actually adds to its depth of character. The four sides are finished with running stitches in orange thread. The knots are slightly protruding. The one-point design in the lower right corner is an appliqué of the letter "K" in red on ivory canvas linen. The center of the reverse side features a vibrant red, green, black, and white Tyrolean tape, possibly from Switzerland. It has a continuous pattern of cute Christmas-colored flowers. The base has a smooth, silky texture. I imagine it's linen/flax, or a linen and cotton blend. The sarasa has fine, smooth threads, suggesting it's cotton. It's fluffy and soft, with a good thickness, and seems durable. The casual, unfussy style is also appealing. The stitching is also full of character. The following measurements are approximate due to the handmade nature of the item and amateur measurement, so please excuse any errors m(_ _)m Width: 26.3-26 cm x Height: 18 cm x Thickness: 7-4 mm Indigo-dyed sarasa section: 15.6 cm x 8 cm Approximately 60g A wonderful one-of-a-kind item. Perfect under a sugar pot & creamer, or an hourglass. Use it to display bowls, tea utensils, cafe au lait bowls, dolls, or vases. I hope those who like it will enjoy using it ☕ Search terms: cafe bistro Tea ceremony tea utensils floral sarasa floral patterns patterns Orne de Feuilles antique Antique shabby chic Edelweiss Alps air b&b auberge hot spring inn Indian sarasa Indonesian batik
