This is a karuta (Japanese playing cards) that funnily introduces popular yokai (supernatural beings) for toddlers. Following the 50 Japanese phonetic sounds from "a-i-u-e-o," yokai whose names start with sounds from "a" to "wa" appear. The back of the reading cards has a simple explanation of the featured yokai for parents. The back of the picture cards can be used as rock-paper-scissors cards. Osamu Nishimoto's illustrations are very cute. How about this for a child who loves yokai? Playing karuta also helps with learning letters and is recommended as an educational toy. It has been opened once and used with my child. The film band is still attached, but it may not be in alphabetical order.
