When I was first shown a photo of a long-tailed tit by someone who takes pictures of wild birds, the cute-things enthusiasts present were beside themselves with joy. I was one of them. Until then, I had almost no interest in wild birds, but I researched all sorts of things for the sake of the long-tailed tit, listened to its call online, and memorized it, hoping to see it in person somehow. The call of the long-tailed tit played through my computer speakers is the same as the sound I hear outside, but it's like being shown a picture of someone you don't know and being asked if you've met them – it's difficult to distinguish the sound in the wild. I was straining my ears, trying to pick out the long-tailed tit's call from among the other birds, but when a crow squawked loudly, I'd shout "Shut up!!" in the forest. I wanted to see the long-tailed tit so badly, I just kept wishing and wishing. Then, my family heard the long-tailed tit's call near our house, and said there was a flock. I thought, "Could a flock really come to a residential area like this?" but I still spent several hours searching the Nishioka Water Source in Sapporo that day and came home. The moment I got out of the car, I could hear the chur-chur sound of the long-tailed tit. It wasn't mixed with the calls of other birds in the forest, but a flock of long-tailed tits was chirping chur-chur-chur-chur. They were in a flock in the Japanese fir trees in the parking lot of my apartment building. It wasn't a case of "a bluebird was nearby," but the white long-tailed tits had come to my house.
