This item has been washed with a neutral detergent and ironed before being made. The patterned tomesode has shrunk considerably. The other plain black fabric has a pearl finish and didn't shrink much and repelled water, but it was washed after being soaked in water until it penetrated. Since it has been washed once, there is little worry of further shrinkage. At home, hand wash with a gentle detergent, lightly spin dry, and iron from the back with a medium heat setting while it's still slightly damp for a beautiful finish. There may be signs of the kimono's history, such as stains, fading, discoloration, pinholes, mold, fold lines, and odors, as well as chalk lines from the making process, and imperfections or misalignments in the sewing.
