He learned the Daishi style from Fujiki Atsunao and excelled in fine kaisho (small block letters). He was skilled in waka, haikai (haiku), and tenkoku (seal carving), and also painted sumi-e bamboo. It is said that he taught calligraphy to Matsuo Basho. He shaved his head and took the name Myoyo Ryokai. Died on May 12, 1703. Age 72. His family name was Hayashi. His given name was Kan, Masazane. His common name was Hachiroemon. His other art names were Keio, Taikyoan, and Kyujitsu-ka.
