This is an unused dyed Oshima (striped Oshima) tsukesage with basting threads still attached. It comes with a Miyanoara Textile certificate. What is "Striped Oshima Tsumugi"? Also known as striped Oshima or dyed Oshima, it is a woven fabric manufactured by members of the Genuine Oshima Tsumugi Textile Cooperative and inspected by the same cooperative. While the threads and weave structure are the same as Genuine Oshima Tsumugi, it is woven using an automatic loom. Unlike the intricate process of matching kasuri (ikat) found in "Genuine Oshima Tsumugi," a traditional craft, striped Oshima often features stripes or plaid patterns that do not require kasuri matching. After machine weaving, embroidery or patterns are overdyed, allowing for more modern expressions than regular Oshima Tsumugi. The base color is a deep mouse gray (grey), with fine patterns overdyed in an ink-like color close to black. On the upper front and sleeves, lines resembling celestial orbits are dyed, with light blue疋田 (hikita) lines serving as accents. (The hikita is dyed, not shibori.) The actual color is closest to the photo taken with the kimono draped on a mannequin. This is a light Oshima Tsumugi that makes a "shushuu" sound of silk. The pattern is simple and chic, so I think it would stand out in a minimalist coordination, such as when you want to make a patterned obi the main focus.
