This is a seal carving in memory of Shimazaki Toson's mother, Nui-san. I haven't seen any other seal carvings by Toson, but this one has "Nui" carved in the upper section and "Toson's characters" in the lower section. The content of the seal carving is unreadable, but the character "馬鈴 (barei - potato)" is carved in the middle, so I believe it's from a poem Toson wrote in his later years. The calligraphy style is flowing. On the back, the previous owner's inscription, "大切ニスヘシ (taisetsu ni su heshi - handle with care)," is written.
