This is a 7-inch plate from the Kuroki Masanobu kiln, Onta-yaki pottery. Onta-yaki is a folk pottery designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan, with a history of over 300 years in a mountain village in Hita City, Oita Prefecture. It is characterized by traditional techniques such as tobi-kanna (flying plane), hakeme (brush marks), kushigaki (comb-drawn patterns), and nagashikake (dripped glaze), resulting in simple, warm vessels that utilize human craftsmanship and the power of nature. Without using machines, the techniques are passed down from parent to child, through a single heir. Onta-yaki was praised by Soetsu Yanagi, the founder of the Mingei movement, as "the world's best folk pottery." This plate has a rare design without kiln marks.
