"Attacked by a Huge Tsunami" ~The Japan Sea Chubu Earthquake as Witnessed by Fishermen~ Compiled by: Akita Prefecture Fishing Federation Donation: ¥2,000 Published: 1983, First Edition Size: B6, Approximately 19.5cm tall, 13.5cm wide Pages: 366 ★The Japan Sea Chubu Earthquake, which occurred at 12:17:08 PM on May 26, 1983, recorded a magnitude of 7.7 (intensity 5) and caused significant damage, primarily in Akita Prefecture, as well as parts of Aomori Prefecture and Hokkaido. Most of the deaths were caused by the large tsunami that occurred immediately after the earthquake. Of the 83 deaths in Akita Prefecture, 79 were victims of the tsunami. Among these, 10 fishermen died in Akita Prefecture, and 2 people from Noshiro City (Akita Prefecture) were swept away by the tsunami while fishing in Aomori Prefecture. The Akita Prefecture Fishing Federation, taking this accident as a lesson, published this book to record the disaster for posterity, not to waste the loss of 12 fishermen, to clarify the causes of the accidents involving fishermen due to the tsunami, and to help prevent similar mistakes from happening again.
