"Douchu" is a traditional craft of Hiroshima Prefecture, made by hammering copper plates into shape, applying a "tsuchime" (hammered) pattern to the surface, and then smoking and polishing them with rice straw. The technique is said to have been established in the first half of the 17th century. The name "Douchu" comes from the fact that the feudal lord of the Hiroshima domain in the early Edo period called one of his exclusive craftsmen "copper insect (mushi)" because of his diligence.
