It's hard to imagine anyone other than Walter, the conveyor of late 19th-century Romanticism, being a more fitting artist to express Mahler's decadent world. This disc, a convergence of the Vienna Philharmonic's mutual affection with Walter, the sublime singing of renowned vocalists, and the excellent Decca recording, has literally become an eternally immortal masterpiece.
