Saki-ori is a very labor-intensive textile made by tearing old cloth into thin strips to create the weft threads, which are then woven one row at a time. The finished product is like a work of art, with a unique sense of design that is one-of-a-kind. It embodies the wisdom and skill of the Japanese people, who transform old cloth into beautiful fabric. This piece uses a variety of gray, off-white, beige, and other shades of yarn for the weft, creating a lovely color palette and texture that is characteristic of saki-ori. I purchased this with the intention of making a noren (Japanese split curtain), as the pattern is the same on both sides (see the last photo). However, it has been stored at home unused.
