The production of this film was announced in February 2021, and it is directed by Questlove (leader of The Roots), who also directed the documentary "Summer of Soul" and won an Oscar (Academy Award). This soundtrack includes 7 tracks including the band's hit songs, rare tracks, and unreleased versions, plus a total of 21 tracks including 3 new unreleased edits by Questlove and J.Period, a DJ/remixer/hip-hop producer from Brooklyn. The documentary film depicts the legend and life of Sly & the Family Stone through their hit songs ("Hot Funk In the Summertime" and "Thank You," "I Want To Take You Higher") and hit albums ("Stand!" and "There's a Riot Goin' On"), transcending the boundaries of race, gender, as well as genres such as soul, funk, gospel, Latin, and psychedelic rock. Interviews with André 3000, D'Angelo, Chaka Khan, Q-Tip, Nile Rodgers, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, George Clinton, Ruth Copeland, and Clive Davis are also highlights. Questlove commented on social media, "This film explores the life, music, and cultural impact of Sly Stone, and sheds light on the issues faced by successful black artists."
