Afanassiev was born in Moscow in 1947 and studied piano with Emil Gilels at the Moscow Conservatory. After winning the Leipzig International Competition in 1968, he was active in the former Soviet Union. In 1974, he defected to Western Europe and re-established his career based in France, receiving high acclaim. He also became famous in Japan after being featured in the NHK BS program "Wandering Pianist."
