List Reliefs are applied to the constricted neck for use as a single-flower vase, and the four sides of the urn each have designs that are divided into themes, forming pairs that face each other. For convenience, the paired designs on the front side are "an angel playing a harp and an angel wrapping a robe," perhaps inspired by Greek mythology and Roman art. The back is based on the novel by Laurence Sterne. Laurence Sterne was an Irish writer who was active in the late 18th century. There are many paintings based on his works, and on the back of the item, "Poor Maria in Love" and "The Shepherd of Bourbonne" are used as a pair.
