THE POGO was a Japanese punk rock band formed in 1985. They disbanded in 1993. Ryota Ogawara, now of JIGHEAD, was the central figure, and along with Shinichiro Sato, now of the pillows, formed the band in 1985 (their first live performance was with THE BLUE HEARTS). They performed live mainly at Shinjuku LOFT and Shibuya Yaneura. In June 1986, they released the EP "Radical Game," which sold out immediately, attracting attention from the industry. In 1987, they signed with Captain Records, the largest independent record label. They released the mini-album "HYSTERIC GENERATION," which became a long-selling hit. The following year, in 1988, they released two more mini-albums ("FUNKY ROCK'N ROLL" and "Please Please Please"). Both reached number one on the indie charts upon their debut. At the "Wonderland Rock Festival" held in August 1988, the audience was more enthusiastic about THE POGO than THE BLUE HEARTS, who were popular on the major label scene at the time. Major record labels quickly began a bidding war. In 1989, they signed a major label contract with Tokuma Japan. Their 1st album, "THE POGO," sold approximately 250,000 copies. Their 2nd album, "1990," showcased their growth with a sound that wasn't limited to punk rock.
