Toso (or Otoso) is a ceremonial sake consumed during the New Year to ward off evil spirits and pray for longevity, a custom with deep roots in Japanese tradition. This is a traditional Japanese-style Toso set with a teapot and cups. It features a traditional design with black and red lacquer, adorned with gold maki-e (sprinkled picture) of auspicious motifs such as pine, bamboo, and plum. When drinking, the custom is for all family members to face east and drink in order from youngest to oldest.
