Vintage Arita-yaki teacups (yunomi). This is the "Hand-Twisted Large Chrysanthemum Platinum Peony" series by Bunzan Kiln. The chrysanthemum pattern is hand-painted using the sometsuke technique, and red and yellow glazes are applied for the overglaze decoration. Made by Shizan Nakajima. Arita-yaki is a broad term referring to Japanese porcelain made in and around Arita Town, formerly Hizen Province, in northwestern Kyushu. The first porcelain in Japan was made in the late 16th century, after porcelain clay was discovered near Arita. Many kilns were built in this area, and various styles of porcelain were produced. Japanese porcelain exported to Europe generally featured Western shapes and Chinese-style decorations. Early porcelain was underglaze painted, but in the mid-17th century, Arita, using cutting-edge technology, developed overglaze (enamel) decoration with vivid colors. ***Condition*** As shown in the photos, it is in very good condition.
