Kinosaki Onsen, located in the Tajima region of northern Hyogo Prefecture, has a long history. The Otani River flows through the center of the town, and the weeping willows on both banks cast their shadows on the water, creating a scenic hot spring resort. Naoya Shiga, who was injured after being hit by a train in Tokyo, stayed here for therapeutic treatment, and his novel "At Kinosaki" was based on his experiences. Kinosaki's hot spring souvenirs include straw crafts. It is said that in the mid-Edo period, a man named Hanshichi from Inshu visited for therapeutic treatment and started selling colorful straw crafts on tops and bamboo flutes to supplement his lodging fees. According to one theory, similar to the straw crafts of Shuzenji in Izu, the techniques from Omori, Tokyo, were introduced to the area. The straw material was cultivated in Okayama and Hiroshima prefectures, but production decreased as industry developed in the Seto Inland Sea. Currently, wheat farming is carried out around Kinosaki. The crafts include flower rings, tops, small boxes, powder cases, and wall hangings. At one time, animals and dolls made of straw were also made, but they have now disappeared.
