The original author, Gruelle, found an old cloth hugging doll (stuffed doll) that his mother used to play with in the attic of his home. He painted the fading face, sewed a heart-shaped candy on the chest, and gave it to his young daughter, who loved it and always played with it. Then, he combined the names from two poems by James Whitcomb Riley, Gruelle's mentor and a poet, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphant Annie," and named it "Raggedy Ann." Gruelle began to tell his daughter stories every night featuring Raggedy Ann. Seeing Marcella grow up with Raggedy Ann, Gruelle thought how wonderful it would be if other children had such hugging doll friends. Then, he published the story of Raggedy Ann that he told his daughter as a book and produced and sold it along with the doll. Two years after its release, in 1920, "Raggedy Andy Stories" featuring Ann's brother "Andy" was published.
