Purchased from a handicraft shop run by the Maasai people of the Republic of Kenya. These are salad tongs handmade by the Maasai. While the craftsmanship might not be considered high quality by Japanese standards, I believe they were developed by them for foreign tourists, rather than for use in their own daily lives. They have a handmade feel, use natural materials, and the zebra motif, which is familiar to them, gives a sense of openness and simplicity. I thought about keeping them for myself, but ultimately, I never used them because I don't have a habit of serving from large platters or using tongs. Upon reflection, I realized that rather than being practical kitchenware, they are perhaps items to be admired and displayed as folk art, evoking thoughts of culture and lifestyle.
