This is an antique silk fabric (fukusa) woven by Masuya Takao, a craft textile mill in Nishijin, Kyoto, using the "Nenkin Tsuzure Nishiki" technique. The woven gold and silver threads of varying thicknesses shimmer brilliantly depending on the viewing angle. (Unfortunately, the photos do not fully capture its beauty.) This item was specially made as a commemorative gift for the founding of a company by a Kyoto kimono merchant. "Nenkin" is one of the famous textile patterns, and it is said to be a prestigious item passed down from Tokugawa Ieyasu to the Owari Tokugawa family. The fabric is preserved in the Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya, which houses treasures inherited by the Owari Tokugawa family. It is a very rare textile woven with roughly textured gold threads of varying thicknesses, yet still possessing a brilliant shine. The late Hiroshi Takao, the former head of Masuya Takao, reproduced the Nenkin fabric at the request of the Tokugawa Art Museum. "Nenkin threads" are made by wrapping foil around hand-spun silk floss (silk thread) of varying thicknesses, combining the shimmering brilliance of the foil with the rustic simplicity of the silk floss peeking through the gaps. "Nenkin Tsuzure Nishiki" is a textile woven by hand using Nenkin threads.
