Paramārtha, following the lineage of the Anhui school of the Vijnanavada, established the pure and undefiled ninth consciousness (Amala-vijnana) instead of the eight consciousnesses. The Hosso school considers the difference between the eighth and ninth consciousnesses to be the difference between phenomena and principle, and thus uses the eight consciousnesses. Furthermore, the *Shōron* school of Paramārtha declined due to the rise of the Hosso school. I believe that in Japan, the Tendai sect of Mount Hiei inherited the ninth consciousness.
