This is a Karaori fukuro obi (formal woven obi) from Yamashiro Kigyo, a renowned Nishijin textile house known for its Karaori (woven silk fabric) used in Noh costumes. Although there is no certification tag, the signature of Yamashiro Kigyo, which is the mark of the Nishijin Textile Industrial Association No. 216, is on the back of the tare (the part of the obi that hangs down). Founded in 1919, this long-established weaving house initially created noble Noh costumes. Therefore, it is particularly well-regarded in Nishijin for its Karaori techniques, producing Karaori that feels fluffy and has a rich luster and volume of threads. The design features checkered patterns, tortoiseshell crests, and nandina berries arranged alternately, woven with matcha green, several shades of brown, and light blue threads. There are no noticeable stains or spots. There is some slight fluffing characteristic of Karaori, but no noticeable thread pulls. (There was a small thread pull on the inside of the otaiko (the folded part of the obi), which is hidden, please check the photo.) I have inspected it carefully, but I apologize if I have overlooked anything. Karaori tends to fluff easily due to the thick threads used.
