Approximately 20 years after the introduction of 9-maruki in 1965, the 12-maruki (with about 3.3 million kasuri) was newly completed in the Heisei era. The 12-maruki weave requires not only advanced "weaving techniques" but also sophisticated "pattern design techniques." The unique Oshima Tsumugi manufacturing method, where the patterns are created by re-weaving threads dyed using a shime-ki (dyeing machine), demands precise "design" beforehand. The number of artisans capable of designing 12-maruki is limited, and the process involves meticulous design, repeated mud-dyeing, and painstaking kasuri matching, taking about half a year to complete. The annual production volume is truly limited. This is a design crafted in the 12-maruki katas-shiki style, which has an overwhelmingly small production volume even among Oshima Tsumugi.
