Thank you for viewing. These commemorative cups are from a collection I've been gathering over the past 20-plus years from antique fairs and art galleries. I've enjoyed them, but it's time to pass them on to someone new. There aren't many commemorative cup collectors, which makes it nice that you can build a collection of unusual items at an affordable price. This particular cup seems to be from a visit to the Fukuman Kokuzo Bosatsu Enzoji Temple in Aizu-Yanagizu, Fukushima Prefecture. It was likely distributed as a souvenir to participants of the group pilgrimages that were common at the time. This area is also famous as the birthplace of the Akabeko legend. The temple is one of the three great Kokuzo temples in Japan, and the principal image, Fukuman Kokuzo Bosatsu, is said to have been created by Kukai, making it a power spot. The inside of the cup features the Mitsuba Aoi (three-leaf hollyhock) crest. I researched it, and it seems that it garnered the faith of warlords during the Warring States period, and during the Tokugawa shogunate, it received the status of a permanent prayer site with a 100,000-koku stipend. It makes sense that it would be depicted on the cup. Cranes are depicted freely on the body of the cup. The light background color makes the cranes stand out. Please check the size in the images taken with a scale. There are no particularly noticeable scratches or cracks, but as it is an old item, please examine the images carefully.
