The original creator, Gruelle, found an old cloth doll (stuffed doll) that his mother had played with in the attic of their house. He repainted the fading face, sewed a heart-shaped candy onto its chest, and gave it to his young daughter, who loved it and always played with it. Then, combining the names from two poems by Gruelle's mentor, the poet James Whitcomb Riley, "The Raggedy Man" and "Little Orphant Annie," he named the doll "Raggedy Ann." Gruelle began telling his daughter stories every night featuring Raggedy Ann. Seeing Marcella grow up playing with Raggedy Ann, Gruelle thought how wonderful it would be if other children had such a doll friend. He then turned the stories he told his daughter into a book and produced and sold the doll along with it. Two years after the release, in 1920, "Raggedy Andy Stories," featuring Ann's brother "Andy," was published.
