The side dishes in the photo were purchased from a small shop, about 2 tatami mats in size, that opens three days a week, from around 10 AM to 2 PM, in the space between buildings nearby. I bought mixed rice with maitake mushrooms and fried tofu, and crispy spring chrysanthemum tempura. Each cost 300 yen. The farmers, an elderly couple, used to come in a light truck to sell vegetables harvested from their fields and homemade side dishes, but now it seems their daughter is selling them. The side dishes include salads, simmered dishes, pickles, kinako mochi (soybean flour rice cakes), various tempura, etc., all for 300 yen. I eat there occasionally. A long time ago, when my parents and son, who lived nearby, were at home, I used to make tempura so much, several times a year, that we would eat it for days. I'm patting myself on the back, but the ones I made, while not as crispy as the ones from the shop, are delicious. I make a lot of everything, whether it's osechi (New Year's dishes) or tempura, which is the way of a lazy person. Eating the same thing for several days is a shortcut for housework!
