This is a lidded birch bark basket by Galina from Finland. It's a piece I purchased from dieci. ⚫︎Size Approximately 23 x 23 x 12 cm (with lid on) ⚫︎Condition I've used it with care, so while it's a used item, there are no particularly noticeable flaws. There are some minor splinters and knots in the wood, but it has developed a beautiful luster and amber color. This is a birch bark basket woven by Finnish basket maker Galina Lottanen. Unlike the typical birch bark used in baskets, which is usually taken from the tree in circular cuts, Galina uses longer strips of bark, sliced diagonally. This results in fewer seams and makes her baskets more durable compared to those with many patches. It's a quality piece that will last for years. With continued use, it will develop a richer luster and a more wonderful texture. Having studied birch bark weaving myself, I am simply in awe of the beauty of Galina's work. Matching the sizes of the top and bottom, especially for lidded items, is incredibly difficult and requires great skill.
