A beautiful petit point and needlepoint work, hand-embroidered in the 18th-19th century, framed in glass with a magnificent acanthus leaf carved wood and plaster/stucco frame. A beautiful woman, lifting her skirt, with a water jug at her feet, smiling. Perhaps she is drawing water from a brick? aqueduct. She is looking at a boy? who is blowing a long trumpet (pet, flute), as if about to enter a house. It feels like the sunlight filtering through the trees, a cool breeze, and the scent of water spray. Fresh and refreshing. An ancient, nostalgic, and pastoral scene. The earth colors, like those of plant dyes, create a rich and wonderful palette. A greige base with a rich expanse of forests, the varying shades of khaki from the leaves, and the browns of the trees. White shirts and red stand out against the chic natural colors. Noble royal blue and rose pink. Khaki and pink accents in the red... shadows of beautiful drapes. The embroidery thread is wool, or perhaps wool & linen. The frame has a striking, three-dimensional carved design with depth. The acanthus leaf, a plant native to the Mediterranean, especially the part of the leaf with deep incisions, is used as a decorative motif. It originated in ancient Greece in the 5th century BC. It has been developed and loved through the Roman era, the Renaissance, and into the modern era, as a gorgeous and elegant motif. Delicate small flowers similar to daylilies and diagonal lines are also carved, making it even more attractive. Bright and chic bronze gold. The tone is uneven from the time of purchase. There are areas that have been repainted or overpainted from where the paint has peeled off, and the tone is not uniform. Please forgive any errors due to amateur measurements below.
