Tamahagane is high-purity steel used as a material for Japanese swords, made by the ancient iron-making method called "tatara iron-making." It is made by alternately adding iron sand and charcoal into a furnace and heating them. The high-quality parts with fewer impurities are selected from the resulting iron mass (kera). Currently, it is produced at "Nittoho Tatara" in Okuizumo Town, Shimane Prefecture.
