Karaori (Kara-weave) was introduced in the late 16th century from Ming Dynasty China's weft brocade techniques and has been woven in Kyoto's Nishijin ever since. It is a gorgeous and opulent woven fabric created by using various colored threads on a twill weave base, with patterns woven in a way that resembles embroidery. In the past, it was used for the attire of limited individuals such as the Shogun and for Noh costumes, and even today, the jackets of female roles in Noh are magnificent examples of Karaori. Indigo dyeing has been cherished as a representative dyeing method among Japanese plant-based dyes. Its deep color and sophistication dress the wearer with elegance and style. *Please note that although this obi has been color-fixed, it may still fade due to friction or perspiration. The supple obi fabric has a light gray color, giving a slightly subdued impression. The entire surface features a design of a stylized "Tachiwaki" (rising vapor) pattern in indigo-dyed threads, with plant motifs arranged within, carefully woven in a plump Karaori style. Silver threads are incorporated into parts of the design, further enhancing the pattern. Suitable for semi-formal to formal wear, such as visiting kimonos, "tsukesage" kimonos, and "iromuji" kimonos.
