This is a chusen dyed tenugui (hand towel) from Horii Co., Ltd. Chusen (or pouring dye) is... A dyeing method where a resist paste is printed onto fabric using a stencil, and then dye solution is poured over the layered fabric. A vacuum pump is used to help the dye solution penetrate and pass through the fabric, resulting in the dyeing process. The design outlines tend to bleed, and the unique uneven dyeing is a characteristic finish. Also, everything from creating the stencil to dyeing is done by hand by skilled artisans. The first image is the front, and the second image is the back. Although it is new and unused, it was displayed and sold in a store, so there is some discoloration along the folds.
