This is a hanging scroll of the Thirteen Buddhas and Kobo Daishi (Kukai). Approximately 48.5 x 146 cm. There is some staining on the back, but it appears clean on the front. In the Shingon sect, fourteen Buddhas are depicted, including the thirteen Buddhas who preside over the thirteen memorial services from the first seven days after death to the 33rd anniversary, and Kobo Daishi (Kukai), the founder of the sect. The Thirteen Buddhas are: Fudo Myoo (for the first seven days), Shaka Nyorai (for the second seven days), Monju Bosatsu (for the third seven days), Fugen Bosatsu (for the fourth seven days), Jizo Bosatsu (for the fifth seven days), Miroku Bosatsu (for the sixth seven days), Yakushi Nyorai (for the seventh seven days), Kannon Bosatsu (for the 100th day), Seishi Bosatsu (for the first anniversary), Amida Nyorai (for the third anniversary), Ashuku Nyorai (for the seventh anniversary), Dainichi Nyorai (for the 13th anniversary), and Kokuzo Bosatsu (for the 33rd anniversary). The hanging scroll is believed to guide the soul of the deceased to the Pure Land through the Thirteen Buddhas, and it is displayed during each memorial service and the Obon festival. Dainichi Nyorai, the principal image of the Shingon sect, is depicted in the center, and Kobo Daishi is depicted in the foreground. The hanging scroll of the Thirteen Buddhas is used not only for Buddhist services but also for daily display to pray for the safety of the family and the prosperity of the household.
