Place a single sheet of paper in the paper tray, and while slightly pushing the back end of the paper in the feeding direction, instruct the machine to copy or print. If it copies or prints without any problems, it's almost certainly "paper feed failure due to roll deterioration or wear." In other words, if you can assist the paper feed by hand, it's likely "paper feed failure due to roll deterioration or wear." There are various other causes of paper feed problems, but about 90% of the machines I've recycled have "paper feed failure due to roll deterioration or wear." If you hear a "crack" or "scratching" sound like plastic breaking during the initial power-on operation, it's a paper feed failure due to mechanical damage.
