Compared to disposable paper pads, this material is gentle on delicate skin and less likely to cause rashes. The central absorbent layer uses not only flannel but also highly absorbent towel fabric. With an absorbent layer made only of flannel, menstrual blood may seep out to the surface and cause side leakage before it's fully absorbed by the entire absorbent core.
