It is the second theatrical film based on Monkey Punch's anime series Lupin the 3rd, and Hayao Miyazaki's first feature film as director. Set in the fictional European principality of Cagliostro, the film depicts the adventures of Lupin III and his gang as they unravel the mystery of a treasure hidden in a ring and counterfeit money.
