The name likely comes from her dwelling in a house with hinoki (Japanese cypress) trees. The Noh play "Hinogaki" is based on a song she composed when she was nearly a hundred years old, formerly a shirabyoshi, living in a house with hinoki trees near the Shirakawa River. She was asked for water by Fujiwara no Okinori, who happened to pass by her hermitage.
