The name comes from the resemblance of its rich color tones, which subtly change with the light, to the wings of the jewel beetle (tamamushi). This unique technique, which involves sprinkling "silver powder" and then applying transparent lacquer mixed with "dye," creates vivid colors and brilliance unlike any other lacquerware.
