● Ko-Beshi (Small Beshi) While Ō-Beshi (Large Beshi) represents a demonic tengu mask, the Ko-Beshi is not only smaller in form but also used as a mask for the Enma (King of Hell) or other oni (demon) gods, with a character distinct from the Ō-Beshi. Although the facial features are smaller than the Ō-Beshi, it has a taut, truly terrifying sense of tension befitting a fearsome oni god. The eyes are small and sharp, the nose is strong and forceful, and the lines of the mouth curve downwards at both ends, completely eliminating the comical aspect seen in the Ō-Beshi. The Ko-Beshi embodies the character of the A-Un (alpha-omega) oni god mask more than the Ō-Beshi. The use of a deep vermillion color, as opposed to the Ō-Beshi's pale red, is also one of the features that indicates its power. Zeami's "Sarugaku Dangi" notes that he first used the Ko-Beshi mask in the play "Ukai" (Cormorant Fishing).
