China sent a delegation to participate in this competition. This was the first Summer Olympics China participated in since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially restored the legitimate status of the Chinese Olympic Committee. Sports delegations from 140 countries and regions participated in this Games, and Chinese athletes competed in 16 of the 23 sports. On July 28, 1984, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the People's Republic of China issued these commemorative stamps to celebrate the participation of the Chinese sports delegation in the 23rd Olympic Games. The design of Stamp 1 (left) is "High Jump." It depicts a male high jumper in action. The design of Stamp 2 (right) is "Gymnastics." It depicts a male gymnast performing a cross exercise on the pommel horse. This is a very significant issue with the historical background of China's first participation in the Summer Olympics after the IOC restored the legitimate status of the Chinese Olympic Committee.
