Artist's Description: Rennyo was a Jodo Shinshu (True Pure Land Buddhism) monk of the Muromachi period. He was the 8th head of the Hongan-ji sect of Jodo Shinshu and the 8th Monshu of the Otani sect of Shinshu. He was the chief priest of Otani Hongan-ji Temple. His real name was Kenju. His posthumous Buddhist title is Shinshoin. He held the rank of Hoin Gon Daisozu. He is considered the restorer of Hongan-ji Temple. In the same sect, he is revered as Rennyo Shonin. In 1882 (Meiji 15), Emperor Meiji posthumously awarded him the title of Eto Daishi. He is often referred to as Hongan-ji Rennyo. In some documents, he is written as "蓮如" with "辶" (two-dot radical). The Shinshu Otani sect officially uses "蓮如". His father was the 7th head, Sonnyo. He was adopted by the court noble Kanehiro Hirohashi. Jitsunyo, the 9th head, was his fifth son.
