# Romance of the Three Kingdoms Hunan Bunzan Brush # Muromachi Old Calligraphy ■Item Details■ This is a handwritten manuscript of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" written in 1691 (Genroku 4), by "Hunan Bunzan," the translator of the popular Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The scene depicted is the preface to Part 1, "Oath of the Peach Garden," where the story of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" begins. It is framed, but the old calligraphy fragment is not glued. The old calligraphy fragment is in the frame as is. You can display it as is, or you can have it made into a hanging scroll in the future. ■Regarding Seals and Previous Owners■ There is a seal on the table of contents of Volume 3 of the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." (Image 11) * "Jutei"…Kimura Jutei, a physician of the Sendai Domain during the Edo period. * "Gen'taku"…Otsuki Gentaku, a scholar of Dutch studies during the Edo period. * "Gitetsu"…Gitetsu, a monk of Tenryu-ji Temple (Hunan Bunzan). To the right of the above three seals is the seal of the Date family of the Sendai Domain (bamboo and sparrow). The seal stamped on the old calligraphy on display is the seal of Kimura Jutei, a physician of the Sendai Domain. ■Dimensions■ Old Calligraphy: 24.2 cm long, 7.7 cm wide Frame: 34 cm long, 18.3 cm wide \* The frame is wooden, and the surface is glass. ■Reading and Modern Translation■ ＜Reading＞ と答（こたへ）て一陣の風ふき起（おこ）り、行方しらず飛（とび）去（さり）にけり。張角この書を讀（よん）で晝夜（ちゅうや）怠（おこたら）ず学び、遂に雨を呼（よび）風を呼（よぶ）術を得て、自ら太平道人と号す。其こと天下大に疫癘（えきれい）行（おこな）はれて、□する人多かりければ、張角あまねく符水を施すに驗（しるし）を得ずと云（いふ）ものなく、盡（ことごと）く張角が座前に来て、自ら其過（とが）を懺悔し、皆立（たち）どころに平復す。張角これより大賢良師と号し、五百余人の ＜Modern Translation＞ As he finished speaking, he turned into a gust of wind and disappeared. Zhang Jiao, after receiving this scroll, studied day and night, and finally gained the power to call the wind and rain, and called himself the Great Teacher of Peace.
