Fat Mike and his then-wife founded the label Fat Wreck Chords in 1991. Hi-STANDARD, a Japanese band, was on the label, and Fat Mike produced them, helping them achieve success in Japan. Their CD sales often surpassed those of major labels and MTV, and they toured six continents and 42 countries. Many artists, such as SUM 41, were influenced by NOFX. In 1983, NOFX was formed by Fat Mike (real name: Mike Burkett), Eric Sandin, and Eric Melvin, who were high school students at the time. The band name was derived from Negative FX, and it was chosen with the meaning "We don't want to be a lame band," thus becoming NOFX.
