Hoshidakara, also known as Hoshidakara-gai, is a type of sea snail that primarily inhabits the lower intertidal zone and beyond, living among reefs and corals. The appearance of this species varies considerably due to the diverse patterns on its surface, resulting in significant individual differences. The shell of the Hoshidakara is round and inflated, heavy, and the underside is flat or slightly concave. The surface generally displays black spots, but the ventral side, where the aperture is located, is white, as shown in the photo. Additionally, there is a line on the outer shell connecting the top and bottom, indicating where the mantle meets. The outer and inner lips each have teeth; the teeth on the outer lip are wide but short, while the teeth on the inner lip are slightly longer and thinner compared to those on the outer lip. The bottom four teeth are also larger. Because the color of the Hoshidakara shell changes when it is scraped, this characteristic is sometimes utilized as a material for crafting small items. Furthermore, although Hoshidakara typically has spots, it is known that there are very large individuals with a solid black color.
